Man Who Gary Collins Hit in DUI Crash Dies

TMZ has learned that the elderly man who was hit by a car driven by a drunk Gary Collins has died.

Collins was arrested after plowing into a car driven by 89-year-old Warren Gates in October. Gates had been hospitalized since the accident, and sadly died 8:00 PM Friday.

Collins pleaded no contest last Thursday to DUI charges and was sentenced to 96 hours in jail.

No word yet on whether Collins will be hit with additional charges. Collins was, however, found not to be at fault for causing the accident. Collins' lawyer tells TMZ, "We are saddened to hear that the gentleman has passed away. This was an unfortunate accident. We are pleased that the police found that Mr. Collins was not at fault. We send our condolences to the family."

31. Well thanks a lot, GARY COLLINS YOU F'IN MURDERER! That's what it boils down to, forget all those mamby pamby euphanisms, when you drink and drive and kill someone it is MURDER.

And this is to any and all morons who continue to visit the threads of these drunken murderers (like Nick Hogan) and say 'oh, we've all drank and drove at some point'. That is a load of CRAP!!! I have never been drunk, high, 'tipsy' or even slightly ineberiated and driven a motor vehicle. NEVER. I don't even drive after taking Nyquil, so stop with the constant 'oh we've all done it' crap, all of us haven't done it and take offense at you morons who do, and then think it's ok to brush it aside because 'we all do it'

33. I'm sorry this man lost his life. I truly am.

But how is this any different from what Hulk Hogan's son did. Leaving that young man, a war veteran, in a vegetative state.

They both lost their lives.

Lock up Gary and Hulk's son.

34. Hey judge the guy all you want, but he was cleared by the police as to the fault of the accident. Mr. Gates failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with Collin's car. It could have happened to anyone impaired or not.

35. i agree, collins should be in jail -- for wearing those freaking short-shorts, with loafers and no sock, no less!!! fashion police, make an arrest

36. If Collins wasn't drunk, maybe he would have been able to take evasive action to avoid the oncoming car. Or ,if Collins was home like he should have been, his car would not have been in the path of the other guy's car in the first place.

I don't care what the cops report says, Collins shouldn't have been in the car and then his name wouldn't be associated with this tragedy. He chose to be stupid, so will now be seen as a MURDERER by many, and rightly so.

38. First of all - Gary Collins should be re-charged with vehicular manslaughter and sent to prison for at least three years along with having his driver's license permanently revoked.

Secondly - TMZ isn't violating anyone's privacy here. They do not need permission to post crime scene photos anymore than MSNBC, CNN or print news. The victim not being a celebrity has nothing to do with it. "Tabliod" or not, TMZ is still the media and therefore have the right to post photos that are essentially public domain.

39. I guess you did not read the police report. The elderly gentleman failed to yield or stop at the intersection that is why his car was hit

40. There is only one way out for you now Gary. For your sake, I hope you figure it out before we meet, which by the way, is not that far off. Best of luck to you.

41. This is the same that will happen to Britney Spears.

42. Wasn't there something posted on a "real" newsite that actually reports the facts as opposed to someone's personal "spin" that the victim caused or contributed to the crash? Or am I thinking of somebody else? For some reason, I am remembering the victim being at fault for the initial crash but if Collins hadn't been so drunk and driving so fast, the damage wouldn't have been so bad. Either way, he is looking at manslaughter so bend over and enjoy your time in prison, Gare.

43. TMZ get your facts STRAIGHT. This guy did not stop and ran in to Gary. The investigation found that it WAS NOT his fault. He was sentenced for a DUI but the accident was the guy who sadly passed away.

It always amazes me on TMZ and worthy credible organizations an report the same story and they are entirely different. The difference is that TMZ just makes crap up to ruin lives.

This was in people.

An elderly man who was involved in the October car crash that led to a DUI charge against Gary Collins has died, according to a report.

Warren Gates, 89, died Friday after being hospitalized since the accident, according to TMZ.com.

On Oct. 23, Gates allegedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with Collins's car. Police said Collins was not at fault for the crash, but the former TV host was subsequently charged with driving under the influence.

After pleading no contest, Collins was sentenced last Thursday to four days in jail.

44. 96 HOURS and he only plead no contest? Thats BS! Lane Garrison plead guilty and got YEARS, NOT HOURS! Just proof positive that theres 2 justice systems. One for "famous" people and one for the regular people. Lane wasnt really famous to begin with so thats why he got the book thrown at him. This oldass WAS famous (at one point) and he got the "hollywood" treatment (which means get pretty much gets off scott-free). It makes me proud to e CANADIAN!

45. Everyone hold your horses!!! Collins was not at fault for the accident...
"On Oct. 23, Gates allegedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with Collins's car. Police said Collins was not at fault for the crash, but the former TV host was subsequently charged with driving under the influence," according to People Mag.

But a valuable lesson to those who drink and drive carefully - you cam still get busted!!!
